- Good question. We use spelling as we pronounce. In Bishnupriya Manipuri 'Wi' pronounce like ওয়ি -> ৱি and Wi->উই both, but Wikipedia more sounds like উইকিপিডিয়া not ওয়িকিপিডিয়া. In Devnagri, Wikipedia->विकिपीडिया, and if you translate to Bengali, it’s become বিকিপিডিয়া, because pronunciation of ৱ sounds ব। Further more, we->উই not ৱি। Wikipedia is an English term or Hawaiian term not Sanskrit. If this is a Sanskrit word no matter what we will use ৱিকিপিডিয়া।
Just for more information on Bishnupriya Manipuri spelling system, I uploaded a page from the Book "বিষ্ণুপ্রিয়া মণিপুরী ভাষার বানানর সিদ্ধান্ত published by: নিখিল বিষ্ণুপ্রিয়া মণিপুরী সাহিত্য পরিষদ, কেন্দ্রীয় কমিটি" Even on that page তৃতীয় প্রস্তাব (ক) says Devnagri alphabet is perfectly introduce Bishnupriya Manipuri, we follow some Bengali spelling because we use Bengali alphabet, and educate ourselves with Bengali in school.
